Acupuncture & Type 1 Diabetes in Boulder Colorado
Type 1 diabetes occurs when a person’s body stops producing insulin, a hormone necessary to metabolize glucose. Sometimes referred to as “juvenile diabetes,” Type 1 diabetes usually begins in childhood - but it can happen at any age. I personally developed this when I was almost 40.
Without insulin, the body can enter a state of starvation since cells cannot access the calories contained in glucose, no matter how much is consumed. Untreated, the result is extreme illness and eventual death.
Since the discovery of insulin in the early 1920s, diabetes treatment has evolved continuously. Strict diets, rigid schedules, and fixed insulin dosages have gradually given way to a more flexible approach involving a food, activity, and insulin regime tailored to fit individual lifestyles. With the help of advanced technology such as insulin pumps and continuous blood glucose monitors, while not a cure, have allowed people with Type 1 diabetes to can live long healthy lives.
Acupuncture & Chinese herbs can help a Type 1 Diabetic in multiple ways. Besides the need to balance food & insulin, there are other factors that can effect glucose control. Stress is a big trigger. It will cause a cascade of stress hormones which cause their own damage as well as causing the Liver to dump glucose into the blood stream. When you have the flu this also tends to cause elevated glucose patterns. Through proper care, we can work at strengthening your immune system so you don’t catch colds as often. If someone has already begun developing Peripheral Neuropathy, we can work with Electrical Stimulation to help increase the circulation in the legs & feet as well as stimulating the nerves for hopefully better functionality.
If you know someone who lives in the Boulder, Denver, Broomfield area who is dealing with Diabetes, either Type 1 or Type 2, please send them this blog. I would love to speak to them about options that can significantly help them, from personal experience.

Hi Siva. If you are a Type 1
Hi Siva. If you are a Type 1 there is really no way that I have found to stop taking insulin as your body is not producing it any longer. You may adjust how much you take due to your diet & exercise levels, but you can not stop completely as your body needs this insulin. Please talk to your Endocrinologist. I hope this helps
